Historic Announcement: SHAKA License Plate Now Available Across Hawaii
In a monumental announcement today, the state of Hawaii introduced the SHAKA license plate, now available at every Satellite City Hall across all Hawaiian islands. This new custom license plate is much more than a simple sticker; it’s a vibrant symbol of Hawaiian pride and a powerful tool to promote the true origin story of the iconic shaka hand gesture.
The SHAKA license plate costs $30 annually, with $25 directly supporting Project Shaka, a local nonprofit dedicated to spreading the message that Hawaii, not California or other places, is the birthplace of the shaka. Project Shaka’s mission is to promote Hawaii, the spirit of aloha, and to educate the world about the authentic Hawaiian roots of the shaka gesture.
Steve Sue, the founder of the Shaka movement, led the launch event at the Satellite City Hall on 925 Dillingham Blvd. Steve, a passionate advocate for Hawaii and the shaka symbol, was hands-on during the event, personally assisting residents in swapping their old license plates for the new SHAKA plates. Excited Hawaiian residents formed lines as early as 7 AM, eagerly awaiting the chance to be among the first to sport the historic new plates.
In interviews, many participants expressed their enthusiasm for the SHAKA license plate, citing their desire to "promote aloha on the road and make the roads safer for everybody." This widespread community support highlights the significant impact Project Shaka and the new license plate are expected to have on promoting positive driving behaviors and spreading aloha spirit throughout the state.
Steve Sue, embodying the spirit of the movement, showcased the latest collaboration with Project Shaka: the SHAKA Slides by PinkPill. This footwear line includes the shaka slides and SHAKS (clogs), available in eight different colors. As with the license plates, all proceeds from the SHAKA shoes support Project Shaka.
